MRR (monthly recurring revenue)

The value of all active subscriptions normalized to one month.

The value of all active subscriptions normalized to one month: an annual plan counts as its price ÷ 12, free trials count as $0. App Store Connect doesn't show an MRR number; computing one from Apple's reports means handling annual normalization, trials, grace periods and currency.

Four decisions turn a pile of Apple data into an MRR number, and two pipelines that disagree on any of them will disagree on the total:

  • Normalization. Every plan is expressed per month. An annual plan at $39.99 contributes $3.33, a weekly plan contributes its price × 52 ÷ 12.
  • Price or proceeds. Customer price and what Apple actually pays you differ by the commission. Pick one, label it, and never mix the two in the same chart.
  • Who counts as paying. Free trials are $0. Subscribers inside a billing grace period are still paying (they have access and Apple is still trying to charge them). Billing retry after grace has lapsed is the genuinely ambiguous case.
  • Currency. Apple reports in the customer's currency. Converting at a moving rate makes MRR move even when nothing about the subscription base changed.

MRR is a snapshot of the current run-rate, not an accounting figure. It will not tie out to an App Store payout, and it is not supposed to.
